AUSTRALIA (COMMONWELTH)








Australia is located in the Southeastern of Asia, between the Indic ocean at the west and south, and the Pacific Ocean at the east.
The island of Australia and Tasmania form the Commonwealth of Australia. Australia has an extension of 7.682.300 km. Its surface is formed by plains and low plateaus however most of the people live in the coast, south-east and southwest of the country.

Australia has one of the most singular habitats of the world. The Great Barrier of Reefs and the biodiversity of the humid tropical forests of Queensland's north are some of the special places of this country.
Australia is an industrial potency with a high standard of living, for this reason it takes problems with the water, soil and air contamination. This country is also one of the highest pollution makers in the world even they have several environmental politics.

A big advantage of this country is that it has a relative low population rate (20, 3 million inhabitants) which makes one of the lowest densities of population in the world.

Australian aborigines emigrated from some point of Asia about 60,000 and 40,000 years before the present, in a period characterized by a reduction of the level of the sea, building a bridge between both continents. Those firsts Australians survived thanks to their knowledge of the territory.

The arrival of Europeans didn’t change the culture of aborigines because the contact between both groups was minimum.
Since 1960 the native people began to move in great groups to the cities. A referendum in 1967 gave the power to the aborigines to participate in the federal government.

The peculiar Australian culture is constructed on Britannic traditions. From the decade of 1960 the affluence of immigrants coming from Europe and Asia has let the development of a multicultural society where aborigines have a very important paper.

The commonwealth is conformed by New Gales of the south, Queensland, Tasmania, the islands Christmas, Cocos (also called Keeling), Heard, McDonald, Norfolk, Ashmore and Cartier plus southern Australia and Western Australia.

Australia hasn’t an official religion and its Constitution warranty the liberty of cult; however the population is composed by Catholics and Anglicans around a 26%.

They have big cities and the people live around 60% in the urban areas. The main cities are distributed by the next order: Sydney, (4.041.400 habitants); Melbourne (3.417.200 habitants); Brisbane (1.601.400 habitants); Perth (1.364.200 habitants), Adelaida (1.092.900 habitants) and Canberra (309.799 habitants) that was built to be the capital.

Australia is the most important exporter and producer of sheep wool in the world. The cows are raised in all the Commonwealth territory however the Queensland is the main producer with 40% of the total. They also have cows that produce meat and milk for different kind of produce of dairies.

Oatmeal, barley, corn, oil seeds and tobacco are very important for the economy of the island. The rice and cotton are important in the area of Murrumbidgee. In 2002 around 32,3 million of sugar cane were produced and also a great variety of fruits such as apples, bananas, grapes, oranges, pears pineapples and papayas. Australia is recognized for its high quality wines, specially the ones from the valleys of Barossa and Hunter .
